An Act of Remembrance
Author: Blake C. Goldring
November 11, 2022
Each year on November 11th, we pause to pay tribute to our men and women in uniform and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
Remembrance Day marks the official end of World War One more than a century ago, but it’s also an opportunity to reflect upon the sacrifice of all those who have served our country since.
From the troops who stormed Juno Beach on D-Day, to those who fought in Korea and Afghanistan, to those who serve here at home, helping with disaster relief efforts and our COVID-19 response; on Remembrance Day, we honour all those who have dutifully served our country – and remember those we’ve lost.
This year, against the backdrop of war in Ukraine and other threats to global security, we are reminded that peace is precarious.
Those who have experienced conflict and seen the horrors of war understand this all too well, and can lend a unique perspective to this solemn day. That’s why we are honoured to be joined by special guest Retired Lieutenant-General Andrew Leslie at AGF’s Remembrance Day Ceremony. General Leslie served our country with distinction for 35 years and reflects on what this day means to him.
For me, Remembrance Day carries tremendous personal significance. I proudly served our country as Honorary Colonel of the Canadian Army. In my 12 years of service, I had the great privilege of getting to know many of our servicemen and women on a personal level. Their commitment to our country inspired me, and was the driving force behind my decision in 2006 to establish Canada Company, which provides support for our military members, veterans and their families.
One of the key ways in which we offer support is through the Canada Company Scholarship Fund. Through the fund, we provide post-secondary scholarships to the children of our fallen. I’m proud to report that, since 2007, we’ve awarded nearly $900,000 in scholarships to 77 recipients from 45 military families.
The fund was created as a living memorial to families who lost a loved one in conflict or as a result of PTSD brought on by their time in service. These individuals – and the families they’ve left behind – are too easily forgotten, though our country owes them a great debt.
On Remembrance Day, we keep their memory alive, along with the memory of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving Canada.
We do this by coming together in thoughtful reflection. We do this through the reading of poignant poems, including The Act of Remembrance, Commitment to Remember and In Flanders Fields.
But most of all, we do this by joining millions of Canadians across our grateful nation in observing a moment of silence to honour those who serve our country, and to remember our fallen.
Lest we forget.
