Lest We Forget

Each year on November 11th, we pause to pay tribute to our men and women in uniform and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
Remembrance Day marks the end of World War One more than a century ago, but it’s also an opportunity to reflect upon the sacrifice of all those who’ve served our country since.
From the troops who stormed Juno Beach on D-Day, to those who fought in Korea, Bosnia and Afghanistan, to all those who participated in NATO and peacekeeping missions across the globe, and those who serve here at home, helping with disaster relief efforts, wildfires, our COVID-19 response and more – on Remembrance Day, we honour all who serve, or have served, our country and remember those we’ve lost.
This year, amid war in Ukraine and the Middle East, we are reminded that peace is precarious. As we reflect upon the meaning of Remembrance Day, we are also reminded of the important role our military plays helping ensure our safety as Canadians.
That role is one I’m intimately familiar with, having proudly served our country as Honorary Colonel of the Royal Regiment of Canada and then as the first Honorary Colonel of the Canadian Army. In my 12 years of service, I had the honour and great privilege of getting to know many of our servicemen and women on a personal level. Their commitment to our country inspired me – along with a committed group of proud Canadians – to establish Canada Company, a charitable organization that provides support for our military members, veterans and their families.
One of the key ways in which we offer support is through the Canada Company Scholarship Fund. Through the fund, we provide post-secondary and post-graduate scholarships to the children of our fallen. I’m proud to report that, since 2007, we’ve awarded more than $1 million dollars in scholarships to 83 recipients from 50 families.
The fund was created as a living memorial to families who lost a loved one in conflict, on training missions or domestic operations, or as a result of PTSD brought on by their time in service. These individuals – and the families they’ve left behind – are too easily forgotten, though our country owes them a great debt.
On Remembrance Day, we keep their memory alive, along with the memory of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving Canada.
We do this by coming together in thoughtful reflection. We do this through the reading of powerful poems, such as In Flanders Fields, The Act of Remembrance and Commitment to Remember.
But most of all, we do this by joining millions of Canadians across our grateful nation in observing a moment of silence to honour those who serve us, and to remember those we’ve lost.
Lest we forget.
