The Trump Blitzkrieg

WE WROTE IN FEBRUARY THAT RESISTANCE WAS FUTILE, and as spring begins the extent of the Donald Trump blitzkrieg is breathtaking. Here; in bullet points, is our narrative:
TRUMP HAS NO SERIOUS OPPOSITION: Democrats are in disarray, with calls to oust Chuck Schumer as Senate Leader. The Democrats’ polls are plunging while Trump’s numbers have inched higher.
IN THE HOUSE, SPEAKER MIKE JOHNSON has become a major force to be reckoned with, cleverly moving legislation and neutralizing hard-line conservatives who have been marginalized.
LEGISLATION WILL BEGIN TO MOVE by late April, with House and Senate Republicans disagreeing on what type of tax bill should pass. But a bill indeed will pass; the main unknown will be when.
TRUMP HAS BEGUN A STUNNING assault on the nation’s top law firms. If these lawyers press legal action against Trump, they will be ostracized and penalized. Can Trump really do this? He already has muzzled many of the nation’s law firms, and his Justice Department will gladly pursue this fight.
HIS HARD-LINE ADVISERS ALREADY have killed “woke” regulations; the governor of Maine criticized Trump for this and now her state faces a cut-off in federal funding.
POLLS SHOW THE PUBLIC is sick of transgender issues and generally supports deporting undocumented immigrants. As for massive job layoffs, they surely could have been handled more humanely, but the public believes the government is bloated and needs spending cuts.
COLLEGES ARE BECOMING MUCH MORE CONSERVATIVE: Columbia University, facing the elimination of $400 million in federal aid, has agreed to stifle dissent.
ON FOREIGN POLICY, Trump has gotten compromises from Mexico, and Canada has speeded up its next election to April 28, anxious to stand up to Trump on tariffs.
AND GREENLAND, A MAJOR TRUMP TARGET, is getting a U.S. delegation this week that will seek more access to rare minerals and shipping lanes. Trump is determined to get concessions from Greenland, and we think he will.
WHAT CAN STOP HIM? Ironically, the only imminent threat would come from a handful of moderate Republicans. Trump has to worry about the economy, of course, but he has an excuse ready to use: Jerome Powell and the Fed, not sufficiently accommodative.
THIS REMARKABLE BLITZKRIEG will intensify as Trump consolidates even more power, raising the possibility that he could over-play his hand. But that’s a theme for summer, not now.
