What Could Go Wrong?

DEMOCRATS ARE FEELING PRETTY SMUG, as polls show they are doing well in Northern states like Wisconsin, but this race is no shoo-in — and something always goes wrong in long campaigns. Sure enough, the Biden Administration is about to send troops to the Mideast.
DEMOCRATS IN THIS TOWN were incredulous yesterday at the news that the U.S. will send “some” troops into the war zone. One Democratic staffer told us yesterday: “We’re sending troops to Gaza six weeks before an election? Are they crazy?”
EVEN IF ONE U.S. SOLDIER becomes a casualty, Donald Trump will have an issue. Trump will claim that a Mideast war would never occur if he was president, and he will pledge to end the war quickly if elected. Congressional hearings are a certainty.
THE U.S. PUBLIC ALREADY has turned more isolationist, and even a modest increase in U.S. troops will become a political issue as an all-out war becomes increasingly likely in the Mideast. What else could go wrong?
THERE’S ALWAYS THE CHANCE of a pre-election “October surprise,” as the Republicans discovered this week when a scandal in North Carolina threatened Trump’s shaky lead in the state, which has 16 electoral votes. And now comes news that the Democrat running for the Senate in Maryland failed to fully pay her taxes.
EVERYONE IN WASHINGTON IS ON EDGE: Could there be stumbles as a powerful hurricane hits the Southeast later this week? Could there be new revelations about hiding the truth about Joe Biden’s health? Will Donald Trump continue to make his abortion views even more confusing?
THERE UNDOUBTEDLY WILL BE FRESH ISSUES in the next six weeks, a major reason why this is no shoo-in for Harris. Our guess is that she will be on the phone to the Pentagon today, demanding answers as troops are headed to the Mideast just weeks before the election.
