Ukraine War Intensifies

WITH WASHINGTON GRIPPED with Cabinet fever, President Joe Biden and president-elect Donald Trump are determined to leave a legacy in Ukraine.
ALL OF THE KEY PLAYERS have dramatically increased their military presence ahead of what most analysts believe will be negotiations later this winter.
IN THE LEAD-UP TO THE TALKS, Trump has pledged to end the war “in one day,” while Biden announced this weekend that the U.S. will allow shipments to Ukraine of the sophisticated ATACMS missile.
COMPLICATING THE CLIMATE, North Korea has sent 10,000 elite troops to a region of northern Ukraine called Kursk. These North Korean troops theoretically would free up Russian troops to fight in other regions.
THERE ARE TWO INTENSE ISSUES AS THANKSGIVING APPROACHES: First, the ferocious fight to join Donald Trump’s inner circle, with one prominent candidate — Matt Gaetz — unlikely to win confirmation.
THE OTHER ISSUE is Ukraine, which has prompted Biden to announce that the U.S. will agree to send the ATACMS, which had been delayed for months because of Biden’s reluctance to strike across the border.
THE LAME-DUCK WHITE HOUSE has been concerned that if Ukraine used the missile to strike targets deep inside Russia, President Vladimir V. Putin might respond by escalating.
“We’re trying to avoid World War III,” President Biden has said. But intense Russian missile strikes in the past few days have prompted Biden to act, with only two months left in his administration.
