The Focus Shifts to Greenland

THE IDEA OF THE U.S. barging into Greenland, eager to take control of precious minerals and shipping lanes, seemed like a joke as 2025 began. But no one is laughing now.
A HIGH-LEVEL U.S. DELEGATION, INCLUDING SECOND LADY Ursa Vance, is scheduled to arrive on the island this Friday, even though Greenland officials insist that this is not a welcome visit but rather is a “provocation.”
OTHERS IN U.S. DELEGATION will include national security adviser Mike Waltz, who has had a rough week, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. Also in the delegation will be Vice President Vance, who decided earlier this week to join his wife. They’ll get lots of publicity back home.
THEIR MANDATE IS UNCLEAR: It’s highly unlikely that the unwelcome visit will improve relations. The new Greenland prime minister said the visit showed a “lack of respect for the Greenlandic people.”
VANCE SAID THIS WEEK that a goal is to increase protection for Greenland, which he said had largely been ignored by Denmark, which owns the island. Vance said this week that “we think we can take things in a different direction, so I’m going to check it out.”
GREENLAND HAS ONLY 57,000 PEOPLE, prompting some analysts to predict that the U.S. could give all of those people a fat check to open up the island. Other options include generous U.S. payments to open up the country’s energy resources and shipping lane.
THIS VENTURE HAS VIRTUALLY NO SUPPORT IN CONGRESS, just as any half-baked effort to make Canada the 51st state has virtually no support. But Donald Trump is undaunted. “We’re going to get Greenland,” Trump said last month. “One way or the other, we’re going to get it.”
