EXCUSE US FOR BEING CYNICAL: Donald Trump and Elon Musk need each other, and they know it.
YESTERDAY’S SAVAGE EMAILS by the two were entertaining, a bit like professional wrestling. The political world was rocked and, most importantly, both men generated headlines; pushing out Snoop Dogg and Vladimir Putin.
BOTH TRUMP AND MUSK SURELY KNOW that they could inflict enormous damage on each other — Musk’s reeling businesses could slide farther; Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill is in trouble.
SO WE THINK THERE WILL BE A TRUCE by this weekend, with both agreeing to disagree. But like Trump’s friction with Jerome Powell, the truce will be exceedingly shaky.
THERE ARE PLENTY OF POTENTIAL INTERMEDIARIES: House Speaker Mike Johnson is the most likely one, since he faces a high-stakes re-write of the bill if there’s no deal by July 4.
NEEDLESS TO SAY, DEMOCRATS WERE GLEEFUL YESTERDAY: Many were praising Musk for his criticism of the deficit-inflating legislation — what a life preserver for the hapless left wing.
WE HAVE LEARNED NOT TO UNDERESTIMATE TRUMP, whose poll numbers inched higher in May. He once bragged that he could shoot people on Fifth Avenue and his base wouldn’t abandon him, and we agree. His grip on the party is unshakable.
THERE’S ONLY ONE POTENTIAL BOMBSHELL that could make this a real political crisis — did Trump spend time with Jeffrey Epstein, as Musk claims? Our guess is no; Epstein’s creepy scene was not Trump’s cup of tea.
THIS WILL DIE DOWN IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS: Musk eventually will get his government contracts and Trump eventually will get his Big Beautiful Bill. But a story like this will generate widespread public attention, and it will not help the Republicans as their 2026 election prospects fade,
