Trump Versus MAGA

Author: Greg Valliere

November 20, 2025

Washington is infamous for its political feuds, and here comes an odd one: Donald Trump Versus MAGA.

The hard-core members of MAGA are furious at Trump because he would welcome legal workers from other countries. There’s a labor shortage in much of the U.S., which Washington is finally recognizing.

The shortage is particularly acute in the computer chip industry, and Trump — looking everywhere for economic stimulus — wants to train skilled workers here.

This has infuriated MAGA, which wants to keep the workers out, despite Trump’s assertion that more skilled workers are an “economic necessity.”

Trump conceded this week that “so my poll numbers just went down, but with smart people they’ve gone way up” because of his shift on immigration.

Trump’s polls on this issue have slipped as controversy heats up over capping immigration or offering bonuses to foreign workers. Trump also has loosened some tariffs, as he continues to search for stimulus.

Support for reform in the so -called H1-B provision is particularly strong among tech companies like Apple and Google, which contribute heavily to Trump.

This will be an interesting issue to watch, because Vice President Vance – an anti-immigration hard-liner — is opposed to Trump’s plan to loosen immigration quotas.
