A National Disgrace

Democrats are furious this morning over a modest bill that probably will end the shutdown. We say “probably” because the bill is so limited that enactment is far from certain.
Where to start? As we predicted earlier this fall, this deal will only last for a few months. Still another shutdown looms in January — a crisis without end, kicking the can down the road every few months.
Republicans said that they will vote on Obamacare subsidies, but a stop-gap bill may be the only possible compromise — other than another shutdown — because millions of Americans cannot afford food and other basics — the “affordably” crisis shows no sign of ending.
Some federal employees who were laid off this fall will get their jobs back but a major deal simply lacked the votes, to the dismay of Democrats — who were hoping to capitalize on their election victories last week. A bitter intra-party fight is coming, starting today.
Some type deal is possible next year, but there is one urgent need that will not go away — the airline crisis and Washington’s failure to train young pilots. It’s a national disgrace, as is the sight of millions of Americans in food lines.
Someone will have to pay for this, most likely incumbents, who face an ugly election a year from now.
