Kevin Hassett Hatchet Job

Author: Greg Valliere

December 16, 2025

Somebody has an issue with Kevin Hassett as Fed Chairman. This town was rocked last night by a hatchet job against Hassett — and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles as well.

Hassett was considered the frontrunner to head the Fed, but that was before an article in the influential Politico gave insiders a new issue.

We read the Politico article twice this morning, looking for transgressions. It was pretty thin gruel — Hassett wasn’t aggressive enough as Director of the National Economic Council? Shocking.

The article portrayed Hassett as insufficiently ideological and not pushing hard enough for rate cuts — just as the economy seems to be slowing and inflation seems to be rising.

Hassett is still in the running, but the Politico hatchet job sent him a message — perhaps from Trump himself — that the next Fed Chairman will have to toe the line on interest rates — no dissent allowed.

Still another bombshell came yesterday — Wiles was shockingly candid (and derisive) about Trump and his inner circle. She denied many of the quotes in a Vanity Fair article, but the quotes are on tape.

Trump is very fond of Wiles, so her job is probably secure. But her detractors will be more likely to speak out about the White House dysfunction, which is pervasive.

An image of disarray at the White is widespread, even among Republicans, just as the president weighs a land war in Latin America.
