Trump Caves on Greenland; What’s Next?
Author: Greg Valliere

DONALD TRUMP DOESN’T HANG ON to a losing issue very long. He abandons the losers and moves on quickly; we saw that yesterday, as Trump called off a high-powered delegation that was going to start negotiating in Greenland.
THAT GOT CALLED OFF, reduced to little more than a sightseeing tour.
TRUMP GOT THE MESSAGE, as Greenland’s leaders made it clear that the visit wasn’t welcome. Most of Europe breathed a sign of relief.
TRUMP HAS SEVERAL FIRES TO PUT OUT, including the worsening security breach and calls for him to dismiss at least one of his security team. “Amateur hour” is the phrase of the week, even among Republicans.
BY LATE APRIL, TRUMP WILL HAVE MORE DIFFICULT DECISIONS to make when Congress comes back from the Easter break with several pivotal tax issues to ponder.
MOST AMERICANS CARE MORE about high food prices, as inflation persists. And that could linger, as auto prices surge in the wake of Trump’s new tariffs. Could Trump cave in on that also? It wouldn’t surprise us if he waters down the auto tariffs.
BUT THERE’S HEAVY LIFTING AHEAD on taxes, with several issues dividing Republicans — how to pay for the tax bill, whether there will be Medicaid cuts, will Congress abolish the debt ceiling, etc.
ONCE THESE PROPOSALS are on the table, Trump will weigh in — and if the reaction among voters and the markets is negative, he will back off. The markets will have real clout.
