What About Elon Musk?
Author: Greg Valliere
July 8, 2025
YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO SOMEONE who’s worth $400 billion, so Elon Musk will stay in the headlines. But there’s virtually no one in this city who takes him seriously.
MUSK IS LOATHED by Democrats because of his savage spending cuts, and he has incurred the wrath of Donald Trump, who calls him a “train wreck.”
BACK IN THE NEWS: Musk has formed the America Party, which he says will represent the 80 percent of voters who don’t like the two major parties. Could he make a difference in upcoming races?
MUSK APPARENTLY WILL try to fund two or three Senate candidates and 8 to 10 House hopefuls in 2026, saving his major effort for the 2028 campaign. He will have to find a surrogate; Musk can’t run for the presidency because he wasn’t born in the U.S.
THERE ARE PLENTY OF POTENTIAL CANDIDATES — entrepreneur Andrew Yang, who had a few months of fame in 2020, Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon, the outspoken moderate Republican, and conservative gadfly Thomas Massie (R-Ky.).
MUSK’S LIABILITIES ARE STAGGERING: He is widely viewed in Silicon Valley as a drug abuser, he has no state organizations, Tesla shareholders want him to get back to work, and Trump will relentlessly pound him.
THE IDEA OF A THIRD PARTY IS ENTICING, but Ross Perot never quite got to 20% in the 1992 presidential race. The last candidate to win any electoral votes was Alabama Gov. George Wallace in 1968.
MUSK IS RESTLESS AND WANTS new challenges, such as a trip to Mars, but he may have to confine his political activities to reducing the soaring federal budget deficit. But that’s a thankless grind for someone like him.
