Why the White House Cocaine Fiasco Matters

THIS DRUG STORY IMMEDIATELY shined a light on Hunter Biden, a self-confessed crack cocaine addict, and Democrats cringed as the New York Post tabloid and the conservative media had a field day. We doubt that Hunter is involved, but the fact that suspicion immediately focused on him raises an issue that worries Democrats.
WHAT DEMOCRATS ARE ASKING: Why is Hunter Biden spending so much time at the White House? He was at the black tie dinner for Indian Prime Minister Modi two weeks ago and the July 4 fireworks celebration, and was with President Biden at Camp David last weekend. With Hunter Biden’s sentencing scheduled for July 26, Democrats are uneasy about his visibility. “Are they tone deaf?” one Democrat asked.
HUNTER BIDEN HAS QUITE AN INFLUENCE on his father; the elder Biden has refused to acknowledge that he’s the grandfather of Navy Jones Roberts, a four-year-old, even though a DNA test showed conclusively that Hunter is
the father and President Biden thus is the grandfather. A scathing New York Times article last weekend has resurrected the issue of why the president refuses to accept the findings.
MOST FAMILIES HAVE SKELETONS in the closet, and Donald Trump has a boat-load, but that didn’t stop him from unloading yesterday. “Does anybody really believe that the cocaine found in the West Wing of the White House, very close to the Oval Office, is for the use of anyone other than Hunter & Joe Biden,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social web site.
TRUMP IS FAR AHEAD OF THE PACK for the 2024 GOP nomination as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis fails to establish any traction; the Florida governor trails by about 30 points in most states. So Trump has the luxury of going after Biden now.
MANY DEMOCRATS IN THIS TOWN are dismayed to see Trump moving into a slight lead in polls for the general election, and they note that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Marianne Williamson and Prof. Cornel West get about 25% collectively in latest polls of Biden’s challengers.
COULD A MORE FORMIDABLE DEMOCRAT EMERGE to challenge Biden for the nomination? Probably not, although one more Biden scandal or a fresh gaffe by the president could be a game changer. At the least, a third party challenge against Trump and Biden appears likely; voters clearly want more options.
