Change is in the Air

American voters, weary of the political dysfunction that grips this city, are about to send a message.
The elections tomorrow are likely to speed up the food assistance program called SNAP; relief is coming on health benefits; and both political parties are facing changes.
Polls released over the weekend were stunning. Donald Trump has lost 10 points in the past few weeks, while polls show both parties have generated strong opposition.
The blockbuster probably will come in New York City, where socialist Zohran Mamdani is the favorite to become the next mayor — setting the stage for an internal brawl in the party between him and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who’s increasingly looking like a 2028 presidential candidate.
Perhaps the most serious crisis is air travel, which looks increasingly unpredictable. Even Trump’s Transportation Secretary is warning of more flight delays.
We still think a deal is coming to end the shutdown, but our optimism about a deal has proved to be unwarranted. The longer this lasts, the longer politicians will face plunging polls.
An apology from Canada — Prime Minister Mark Carney apologized to Trump for the provocative TV ad that blasted high tariffs. Perhaps this will lead to a resumption of trade talks between the two countries.
And condolences to our friends in Canada, who should be very proud of the Blue Jays for their fantastic performance in the World Series. Nothing to be ashamed of — both teams were fabulous, and they got to play in some of the greatest games ever.
