Donald Trump Shocks Washington and GOP Moderates with Gaetz Pick

Author: Greg Valliere

November 14, 2024

SHOCK WAVES: Rarely in recent years has Washington been rocked like it was last night. The nomination of renegade Matt Gaetz to head the Justice Department shocked Washington and sets up a huge showdown between Donald Trump and GOP moderates.  Trump is likely to lose a vote to confirm Gaetz.

Gaetz is not just a firebrand in the House; he’s recently been investigated for possible sexual misconduct, illegal drug use and accepting improper gifts.

The Justice Department did not charge him in an investigation involving inappropriate conduct with a minor last year, but an ally pleaded guilty and cooperated against him in the probe. And the House Ethics Committee in June expanded an inquiry into Gaetz.

Gaetz was subpoenaed by the House Ethics Committee as recently as September after he stopped voluntarily cooperating with its investigation.

Gaetz is not simply a controversial pick — considering his background, he is a signal that Trump is prepared to shake up the establishment, distracting the GOP from the president-elect’s own decisions.

And then there’s Tulsi Gabbard, who Trump nominated for Director of National Intelligence. In 2017, Gabbard met with accused war criminal and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, later saying he is “not the enemy of the United States because Syria does not pose a direct threat to the United States.” She later called him a “brutal dictator.”

She has also made a series of extreme comments about foreign policy, including many favorable to Russia.

More tomorrow in this shocking turn of events . . .
